Everything below I do myself. If a job needs a second set of hands or a specialist, I'll tell you that rather than take it on and hope.

Emergency call-outs
If water is going somewhere it shouldn't, ring me first and turn the water off at the meter second. I keep the van stocked for the common failures — burst flexible hoses, split copper, failed hot water units — so most emergencies get sorted on the first visit rather than turning into a return trip.

Blocked drains
Most blockages out this way are tree roots in older clay sewer lines, or fat and wipes in newer estates. I clear it with a machine, then put a camera down so you can see the cause yourself. If the line is broken rather than blocked, you'll get told that straight — not sold a repeat clean every six months.

Hot water
A hot water unit usually gives you warning before it goes: lukewarm water, rusty water, or a wet patch underneath. Sometimes it's an element or a thermostat and it's a cheap fix. Sometimes the tank has gone and replacing it is the honest answer. I'll tell you which one you're looking at before you spend anything.

Burst pipes & leaks
A leak you can hear but can't see is usually under a slab, in a wall cavity, or in the service line between the meter and the house. I isolate and locate it before opening anything up, so the repair is a patch rather than a demolition. If your water bill has jumped for no reason, that's the first thing worth checking.

Taps, toilets & fixtures
Dripping taps, running toilets, mixers that have seized, a new sink or dishwasher connected. These are small jobs and I'm happy to do them — a dripping tap wastes a surprising amount of water, and a running cistern will quietly add up on your next bill.

Water pressure & pipe replacement
If your pressure has dropped off over the years, or the water runs rusty when the house has been empty, the culprit is usually original galvanised steel pipe corroding from the inside. Plenty of homes around Kingswood, Cambridge Park and Oxley Park still have it. Replacing it with copper or PEX restores the pressure properly rather than treating the symptom.

Gas fitting
Cooktops and heaters connected, gas lines run, and leaks traced and repaired. Gas is not a job to hand to a handyman — the work must be done by a licensed gas fitter and it must come with a compliance certificate. If you can smell gas, turn it off at the meter, don't touch any switches, and ring me.

Rainwater tanks & pressure pumps
Out at Londonderry, Llandilo, Castlereagh and Mulgoa a lot of properties run off tank water with a pressure pump, and some are still on septic or aerated systems. Pumps fail, foot valves block, and long service runs from the meter develop leaks that are hard to find. It's a different kind of plumbing to a suburban block and I do a lot of it.
